Welcome to my new J R Book Review: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty*, I speed read this book as soon as I heard that the TV show was coming!
I know there has been a lot of hype about the TV show which I also loved, but I have to say- the book was better. The story is slightly different and I much preferred the story in the book to how it turned out in the series.
Drama / Mystery / Thriller
Big Little Lies* is based around a group of school mums in the beautiful idyllic coastal town of Pirriwee idyllic coastal town of Pirriwee coastal town of Perriwee in Australia (the TV series moved it to the US) and the dramas that unfurl in their lives during the school year. The different mums are all very different characters and I think that’s one of the reasons this story is so special, they are almost unlikely friends.
Jane is the young mum who moves to the area with a mysterious past, Celeste is the rich mum with the perfect life who is hiding something very dark and Madeline (my fave) is the feisty one! The book starts on orientation day where there is an incident with the children in the playground, the consequences of which follow the children all the way through the academic year. There are also flash forwards to the finale of the book where a crime has been committed so each chapter you are on tenterhooks to get to the end. I like it when books do this, Ruth Ware writes in a similar fashion and Damages the TV show was shot like this.
Why I liked it
The story is very strong, it covers a lot of taboo subjects beautifully. It manages to be chilling, but also amusing. The opinions of the other mothers and fathers throughout the book are great!
I love books, as a child I devoured them, now I am older and I spend most of my time at work, I don’t have time to read as much as I would like, which is why I love Audible, I listen to books in the car, on my commute etc and they’re great. Most of the books I review on my blog I have actually listened to rather than read, click here if you want to have a free trial of audible and get a free audio book*.
Definitely 5 stars! An absolute must read!!
